Spirit Island is incredible

My partner's all time favourite game! I *really* enjoy it too. I wish more board games had themes as well thought through as this. So many other games have you take on the role of an empire exploiting lands and populations, whereas Spirit Island flips that on its head and has you resist invaders to protect nature and the local people. A refreshing and important twist on the genre. Plus, it's co-operative, heavy, asymmetric... so much variety. Would absolutely recommend if you like games on the more complex end of the spectrum (and I think there is now a simplified version you could look into if you prefer lighter games)!

Fantastic crunchy puzzle game

This game is an incredible, crunchy puzzle game where you play as one of several spirits, all with their unique playstyle, on an island driving back invaders and protecting the natives.
The game is tough, giving a great sense of accomplishment once you achieve victory, but gives you ways to increase that difficulty once you've got your head around the mechanics and require a tougher challenge.
Easily one of my favourite games!

Superb 2-3 player game

As my uni friends have all scuttled off to different corners of the world, it is now mostly just me and my brother up for board game sessions. We have gone through a number of 2 player games: 7 wonders duel, tash kalar, euro games, which were all competitive.

Spirit island was a fantastic discovery for us, as it offered an engaging and brain burning cooperative puzzle. The feeling of driving out the invaders after being overwhelmed by their waves throughout the game is very rewarding. The game has plenty of replayability with the different invasion factions and we enjoy the aesthetics very much.

Summary: great 2 player game for heavy gamers that have lost their usual gaming group

Loved it, but it's not for the faint-hearted

There are two things that sell this: firstly its theme is very much against the trend of much of boardgaming themes; secondly it's a very think-two-steps-ahead strategic co-op game. If either of those are a turn off for you, it's probably going to stay on your shelf. If you like them, welcome to one of my favourite games!

The theme is it's the Anti-Catan. It challenging the basic presumption in a lot of explore-exploit-expand games that settlers are moving into empty lands, or lands that are occupied by natives to be displaced. That's a problem because those games are repeating a propaganda story that exactly mirrors the lies that the colonial countries told to justify seizing lands, displacing and destroying the native peoples in the process. Spirit Island reverses that: you're protecting the native people from the invading colonisers. There's a lot of clever thought that goes into how that theme plays out in the game, it's not just "swap who wears the white hats and who wears the black hats". It's got one of the strongest connections between theme and mechanics I've seen.

The game is very think-ahead though. The game plays out over up to a dozen rounds, you get to see what's coming up, and to have any chance of success you need to be trying to plan at least one, preferably two, moves ahead. If you can do that, the game is far from impossible to win, but when you do win, you still feel like you really had to work for it. And once you've got the hang of that, it's a beautifully balanced game, with multiple different strategies for victory - a lot depending upon your choice of spirits to play - and enough of a dose of luck of the draw features to ensure that, however much you plan ahead, you still have to be reacting to the unexpected and unwelcome, but not so much randomness that planning is pointless.

Perhaps the best Coop I've ever played

Fantastic theme and components, rules very thorough and lots of ways to play.

Hard to think of any negatives... complexity is medium-plus, probably not for beginners unless they are very keen.
