Similo: If Codenames and Mysterium had a younger sibling.

Elegantly Simple
I love games with elegant rules, and Similo is no exception. The rules couldn’t be simpler: The Clue Giver secretly selects a random card and shuffles it together with 11 others. The goal is to guide the other players to the chosen card by laying down a card vertically to indicate similarity or horizontally to show dissimilarity.
The only challenge I’ve encountered when teaching this game is that some players struggle with the idea of eliminating cards based on the dissimilarity clue. When you place a card horizontally, indicating that the chosen card is not like the one played, you’re asking the group to eliminate cards that resemble the played card. For some, this requires a small leap in logic, which can be initially confusing. But once players grasp this concept, the game flows smoothly.
A Dinner Table Win
I recently played this with a friend who isn’t into board games but enjoys Wordle, a popular online puzzle game. I figured Similo might be up his alley. It worked like a charm—we played a couple of rounds while waiting for our meal, and by the time dessert arrived, I think I had converted him to board games! He was hooked not only by the puzzle-solving aspect but also by the creativity involved in giving clues.
You have five cards to choose from to help guide the other player, and often, none of them are a perfect match. For example:
You might say a card is similar to Catherine the Great when you have Alexander the Great because they share a title.
Or perhaps the characters are similar because they’re all female leaders who met untimely deaths.
Sometimes, the only link you can find is that both characters wear similar headgear.
Cooperative Fun
I’ve really been enjoying cooperative games lately, and Similo fits that bill beautifully. There’s a certain thrill in silently narrowing down the 12 cards and correctly identifying the chosen one—it feels almost like performing a magic trick.
When playing with more than two people, the other players discuss the Clue Giver's hint, working together to decide which cards to eliminate. In a game using historical characters, for instance, our group not only made sharper observations but also learned more about the figures involved. For newer or less confident players, listening to these discussions can be a great way to understand the game’s mechanics.
That said, I also appreciate the purity of a two-player game, where both players know how to play and can wrap up a round in under 10 minutes.
If you’re looking for another cooperative game with a bit more humor and silliness, I’ve been getting a lot of laughs out of Top Ten lately.
The Perfect Pocket Game
Similo fills a great niche in my collection—quick, simple, and portable. I can easily see myself carrying a deck in my backpack, ready to pull it out for a quick game with just about anyone.
Variety of Themes
Similo decks are priced around £10, and there are a variety of themes to choose from, making it easy to find one that suits your group. I picked the Animal deck to play with my nieces, while I picked up the Historical deck to play with friends and my gaming group. The historical theme, seems to add more depth to the gameplay—as the more you know about the characters and their relationships, the better your strategy becomes.
Additionally, Similo has expanded into popular franchises. If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, you're in luck! There are themed decks available, but make sure everyone has at least some knowledge of the subject matter to fully enjoy it.
A Creative Puzzle—Like Codenames
If you enjoyed the creative puzzle-solving aspect of Similo and have a penchant for word games, I highly recommend moving on to Codenames. It’s more challenging, as it requires you to think deeply about clues, but the satisfaction of crafting the perfect hint is well worth the effort. And if you prefer sticking to the cooperative playstyle, Codenames Duetis a fantastic two-player co-op version that you might enjoy.

Beautiful Art, Solid Game

I bought this mainly to play with family at Christmas, that didn't happen because of Covid but there you. Still I've played it a couple of times and whilst it won't blow you away it's a lovely little co-op game where anyone can play.
The art is also amazing and the delivery was prompt with no issues.

Buying games from Thirsty Meeples

Excellent service as usual from Thirsty Meeples. Similo is a kind of cooperative guess who. Average game but works well over zoom or WhatsApp video.
