Sea Salt and Paper: A Holiday Review (in the Alps)

Sea Salt and Paper is a delightful set collection game that shines with its simplicity while still being exciting and competitive . The core mechanics are easy to grasp: on your turn, you either draw a card from one of the discard piles or draw two cards from the deck and discard one. You can also play a pair of “Duo” cards to trigger an effect. While the rules are straightforward, the game offers surprising depth. Success hinges on keen observation—watching which cards other players are collecting and tracking what’s being discarded into each pile.
One of the standout features is the end-of-round mechanism. The player who ends the round has the option to bet that their hand has the highest point total. This twist adds suspense and tension, especially when you risk losing or gaining a significant number of points. It’s a clever way for players who have fallen behind to stage a comeback without it ever feeling unfair.
The game’s dynamics shift slightly depending on the player count. In a two-player game, for instance, the Shark Attack cards become more important, and the game feels more like a direct duel. With four players, it feels a little more relaxed.
Despite its simplicity, Sea Salt and Paper has replay value. I’ve played it numerous times, and it’s still as enjoyable as when I first started. I’m also looking forward to trying the mini-expansion to see how it tweaks the gameplay and keeps things fresh.
The game’s components are charming as well. The cards feature beautiful photographs with an origami and seaside theme. Although my mother initially found playing this game in the Alps made the nautical theme seem a bit out of place it wasn’t long before she was engrossed in the art and gameplay.
I’ve recently been enjoying clever little card games that come in small boxes but pack a lot of fun. Sea Salt and Paper is perfect for taking on holiday. During our two-week stay in the Alps, we played a few rounds most nights, and it quickly became quite competitive.
Overall, I’m very pleased to add Sea Salt and Paper to my collection. It’s a compact, engaging game that offers plenty of replayability and is a great fit for both casual and competitive players.

Our favourite little card game

A great little set-making card game with an odd but endearing nautical origami theme. The rules are a little confusing at first mainly due to the scoring and special powers icons (there really should be a better summary table card in addition to the 'round order cards) but once the basics were clear, my small group (we've mainly played 2 player, but also up to 4) had a great time - each round includes an end of round risk mechanic - do you simply stop the round and everyone scores, or do you gamble that you have a clear (hidden) lead and give them one last chance to draw cards - if you gamble correctly, you win the points!!!

Excellent card game that works great with just two people. The art is super cute too!

Exceptional small card game

Incredible design, rules that take a couple of plays to get your head around, but once you've got it it makes a really solid game for two, three or four.

So many different ways to win, no two games are ever alike, and you can love it for the strategy, the design, or anything in between. We take it everywhere.

Fun, fast and portable

Bought this game a couple of weeks back, played it and all player counts and found that I enjoyed it alot. It's small so can be played in the pub, and quick, turns fly past. One to pick up
