Looking for treasure? How about an expansion to treasure?

Hey folks. Now first of all a big confession here...I am a MASSIVE fan of the original game "Lots Ruins of Arnak", so I was 50/50 whether I even wanted to add this to my already gorgeously tasteful, to be quite honest aesthetically beautiful original. I love love love the original game, for so many reasons. The board is beautiful, the theme resonates strongly with my sense of wanting to explore and travel, and it also presents the player with lots of resource options but also a good many constraints, running over a relatively short series of game turns. In summary, the original game packs a lot into a short time.

So, could an expansion REALLY add to that, and how?

Well the main thing which seems to make (or break) the player enjoyment of this expansion in the new Expedition Leaders themselves,...and after playing it with some relative newbies, and then with some experience "Arnakkers", I think I know why.

There are a variety of things added within this expansion, to quote "this expansion contains alternative research tracks that offer even more variety and a bigger challenge, new item and artifact cards to create new combos and synergies, along with more guardians & assistants to meet and sites to explore."

Yes, yes, all well and good. But none of THAT stuff really changes the game. What DOES change it, a lot, is when you add Asymmetry to the game, through giving 4 players the chance to try 6 different leaders. And apart from the "Captain", who just gives you an extra meeple and a few minor additional benefits, the rest rest of them really do change the feel of play.

So, herein lies the challenge, and it's definitely not just one for Arnak fans. If you play Arnak a lot, and also have gaming mates you've played it with a lot, then you should definitely buy it. Buy the expansion, merge it it (it all just about fits into the original box btw)...stamp on the expansion box... and then burn it....because you'll never go back!

However....if like me you have some friends you very occasionally play Arnak with, and then some raving fans of the game who totally get it and know the rules off by heart, then they will LOVE the variety which adding in the special "character powers" brings. The tough part will be deciding if you want to inflict the Expansion Leaders onto those people who play less often (and God forbid those who are new to the game).

A friend and I in the same gaming group both had the expansion, and she has taken hers out of the orginal game after adding it, whereas I have added mine in and there it will stay! Just beware that it definitely DOES make the learning the game, or trying to become half-decent at it a lot harder for newbies. The joy of Arnak is the seriously tough resource choices and paths for gaining this and that, to convert into this and that, so you can get this and that. For a new player, throw in the Expansion Leaders and you may just never see them again!

Who doesn’t want more Arnak?

Adds some interesting variations to the base game without making it any more complex. A welcome addition to an already great game.
