Great cooperative LCG for LotR-loving couples who are interested in deck-building

If you are a LotR-loving couple that wants a cooperative deck-building game that will keep you busy for a while, look no further, just be prepared to invest both time and money!

FantasyFlight has made several LCG (Living Card Games), with Marvel and Arkham Horror being the other two notable experiences. The starter box can be learned and beaten in one long night, though the fun comes from purchasing the regularly released expansions (of which there are dozens at this point) and constructing new decks, which demands both money and time.

In short, the game revolves around you building a deck to support three heroes as they quest to overcome a certain quest scenario. Learning the ins and outs may seem a bit overwhelming, especially if you're new to the modern board game scene, but there are plenty of "how to play" videos online and with some repetition it will soon become second nature. While it is advertised as a 1-2 player game (up to four with two core sets) this game is significantly harder to solo (though you can build two decks and play it as a two-player game as one person). Deck-building is ESSENTIAL in this game, with players constantly needing to adjust/rebuild your deck to tackle different quests. The replay value comes from buying new expansions, as well as replaying old missions to try and beat your previous score, which is always fun to do with a newly constructed deck. If you're new to deck-building, this is a good place to start learning. If you're not into…

Brilliant and thematic adventure for the solo player

I dove into the Lord of the Rings LCG for two reasons: I love the source material, and I love Netrunner, another Fantasy Flight LCG. Lord of the Rings LCG is a wonderful combination of theme and mechanics which combine into great story-driven experiences.

The game works brilliantly both as a cooperative challenge and as a solo gamer. It's easy and quick to set up and have an adventure with the starter decks. Or if you want to really dig into the game, explore different strategies and deck-building, you can do that too.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to battle alongside the characters of Middle-Earth or anyone looking for a tactical and exciting cooperative card game.

One Game to rule them all!

The Lord Of The Rings (LCG) starter set was the first card game I purchased, and what a game it is!

As a fan of the movies, and having had the books read to me as a small child, this card game is a welcome addition to all thing Lord of the rings.

The art work on all of the cards is brilliant, and really helps to create an atmosphere for the game, along with the various pieces of flavour text on the challenge cards.

The game itself, at first glance (and even after one or two rounds) does seem quite complex, however the instructions provided are very easy to understand. After a game or two, the phases become a natural action to you.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative adventure game in which the players attempt to complete a scenario, each with three heroes of their choice and a deck of allies, events and attachments to support them. Each round, players send their heroes and allies to quest or to fight with enemies that engage them. However, as the heroes and allies exhaust after questing, defending, or attacking, the players' options are typically insufficient to deal with everything at once. Therefore, players need to determine whether it is more urgent to quest and make progress in the scenario while the enemy forces gain power, or to take down enemies while making no progress, not knowing what will come next.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is the base game of a Living Card Game for which new adventure packs are released monthly. The base game contains three scenarios, twelve famous characters from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien (including Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Denethor and Eowyn), and four pre-constructed player decks. Players can either use one of these decks or construct their own deck to increase their chances to be succesful in the more challenging scenarios. The monthly adventure packs contain a new scenario, a new hero, and new player cards to be used in their deck. The base game is for 1-2 players, but with an additional base game the scenarios can be played with up to four players.

Although this game is set in Tolkien's Middle Earth, the scenarios do not represent scenes from the books, but rather take place in the seventeen years from Bilbo's 111th birthday until Frodo's departure from the Shire.

The scenarios from saga-expansions do represent scenes from the books. Saga-expansions will form the Campaign Mode so that you can play all the saga quests that deal with the trilogy (+ Hobbit) together in one marathon campaign.
