Quick and easy teach, but hours of fun!

What a great little game this is. On the face of it, it's very simply, but there's lots of trying to work out what other players are doing. And it's wonderful!

Probably the best value game if you want Silly Family Fun!

6 Nimmt! (also known as Take 5 in the USA) is a fantastic light card game that plays up to ten people, and can be played by anyone. The rules are a bit unclear from reading through, but quickly become obvious when playing. Basically, players simultaneously choose a card from their hand and these are then added to one of four rows on the table. Starting with the lowest value card, the cards are added in sequence to the row with the highest value that is lower than the card played (I said the rules sound confusing, but it is much clearer when playing!). Thus, if there are four rows ending in ten, twenty, thirty, and forty, the thirty-five would be added after the thirty, and the thirty-six would be placed after that. When the sixth card is placed, instead of adding it to the end of a row, the first five cards are moved to that player's scoring pile and the card they placed becomes the star of a new row.

There are a couple of things that make this work: firstly, different cards have different values and the winner is the player with the lowest score. Somehow the game is a bit of a mystery - it isn't just random chance because some players are better at it than others. Yet, things can go wrong for anyone. In this way, there is a delicious feeling of control, until everything falls apart. And once things go wrong, things can just get worse and worse. This is accompanied by much hilarity, mostly because everyone knows that next time it could be them picking up a pile of brightly…

Fast and Furious Fun

This is a light filler game, though there is certainly some strategy to it. It plays well with 2 to 10 players, is easy to explain, plays fast and is inexpensive. It is is simple, fast and fun card game and I highly recommended it.

OVERVIEW

In 6 nimmt!, a.k.a. Category 5 and many other names, you want to score as few points as possible.

To play the game, you shuffle the 104 number cards, lay out four cards face-up to start the four rows, then deal ten cards to each player. Each turn, players simultaneously choose and reveal a card from their hand, then add the cards to the rows, with cards being placed in ascending order based on their number; specifically, each card is placed in the row that ends with the highest number that's below the card's number. When the sixth card is placed in a row, the owner of that card claims the other five cards and the sixth card becomes the first card in a new row.

In addition to a number from 1 to 104, each card has a point value. After finishing ten rounds, players tally their score and see whether the game ends. (Category 5 ends when a player has a score greater than 74, for example, while 6 nimmt! ends when someone tops 66.) When this happens, the player with the fewest points wins!

6 nimmt! works with 2-10 players, and the dynamics of gameplay change the more players that you have. One variant for the game has you use 34 cards, 44 cards, 54 cards, etc. (instead of all 104 cards) when you have three, four, five, etc. number of players. This change allows you to know which cards are in play, thereby allowing you to track which cards have been played and (theoretically) make better choices as to which card to play when.
